One of the most important developments of the global economic order is the internationalization of services and of industrial production which development was facilitated by the falling costs for communication and transportation which have enabled firms to integrate production and other activities round the world. Whereas, in the past firms invested almost as much abroad as domestically, it is not so now. Also, contrary to the assertion that MNCs set up units in foreign countries and placed all the units on an equal footing in terms of technology transfer this is not usually the case (Giplin 2001. Page 292). This has often been blamed on the lack of adequate intellectual property protection in developing countries. Internationalization of services has been concentrated amongst the major powers and within particular regions. The MNCs of the three major economic powers have been concentrating their FDI in their own regions. American MNCs are now shifting their outsourcing toward Mexico; Japanese MNCs favour East Asia for their outsourcing and Germany is investing heavily on Eastern Europe. The trend therefore is that while economic competition and financial markets have become more global, production and services are becoming more regional. This is mainly because new and more effective methods of production and management which the firms now use are more manageable on the regional rather than global level (Giplin, 2001. Page 293). Thus the firms are becoming less TNCs and MNCs in the sense that FDI is reducing.
